It was established in 1856 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, as an “Institute of National Importance” through an act by Parliament.

The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, commonly known as IIEST Shibpur, is an autonomous engineering college in Kolkata; it is one of the National Institutes of Technology (NIT) in India.
