The Indian Foreign Service, popularly known as IFS, is one of the premier Central Civil Services of the Government of India, categorized under Group A services. Selected IFS officers are involved in diverse international issues including trade, diplomacy, and cultural relations.

The Indian Foreign Service (IFS) is the official service for conducting diplomatic relations with foreign states and international organizations. The IFS is headed by the Foreign Secretary and is responsible to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for the protection of Indian interests abroad.

Important Clarification: There is no separate application for the Indian Foreign Service. It is one of the services you opt for through the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE). Do not confuse this with the Indian Forest Service (IFoS), which has a separate Mains exam.

UPSC Indian Foreign Service Exam 2026 Eligibility

The UPSC Eligibility Criteria 2026 requires aspirants to fulfill specific conditions to participate in the examination cycle.

  • Nationality: For the Indian Foreign Service, the candidate must be a citizen of India.
  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must hold a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognized University. Final-year students are also eligible to apply for the Prelims.

To apply, candidates must have attained 21 years and must not have reached 32 years of age. For the 2026 cycle, candidates must be born not earlier than August 2, 1994, and not later than August 1, 2005.

How to Apply for UPSC IFS 2026

Applying for the Indian Foreign Service 2026 involves a two-part online registration process:

  • Visit the official portal at upsconline.nic.in.
  • Complete One Time Registration (OTR) if not already done.
  • Part-I: Fill in basic details and select your exam center.
  • Part-II: Upload scanned images of your photograph, signature, and Photo ID card.
  • Service Preference (DAF): Your actual choice for the Foreign Service is finalized in the Detailed Application Form (DAF-I and DAF-II), which you fill out after qualifying the Preliminary exam.

Application Fee: ₹100 for General/OBC Male. Female, SC, ST, and PwBD candidates are exempted from the fee.

  1. Preliminary Exam: Two objective papers (General Studies and CSAT). CSAT requires 33% to qualify. Negative marking of 1/3 marks applies.

  3. Personality Test: A 275-mark interview conducted by the UPSC board.
