SSC CHSL Syllabus & Exam Pattern 2026

The SSC CHSL Exam structure has undergone significant changes recently. The Tier-I is an Objective Multiple Choice exam which serves as a screening test. The Tier-II exam is now a Computer Based Examination (not descriptive) conducted in two sessions on the same day, including Mathematical Abilities, Reasoning, English, General Awareness, and Computer Knowledge.

Let’s follow the SSC CHSL Exam Pattern 2026 & Scheme in detail. Note: The total duration for all 4 sections combined is 60 minutes.

Basic Guidelines

  • The written test consists of an objective paper of 100 questions / 200 marks.
  • There will be a negative marking of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer in Tier-I.
  • The exam is qualifying in nature; marks are not added to the final merit list.

The selection is now based entirely on Tier-II marks. The new pattern is as follows:

SSC CHSL Detailed Syllabus 2026

1. General Intelligence (Reasoning)

Comprises both verbal and non-verbal type questions. Key topics include:

  • Semantic Analogy & Classification
  • Venn Diagrams
  • Symbolic/Number Classification
  • Drawing Inferences
  • Figural Pattern (Folding/Completion)
  • Number Series & Embedded Figures
  • Coding and De-coding
  • Problem Solving & Critical Thinking
  • Emotional & Social Intelligence
  • Word Building

2. English Language

Improvement of Sentences, Active/Passive Voice of Verbs, Conversion into Direct/Indirect narration, Spot the Error, Fill in the Blanks, Synonyms/Homonyms, Antonyms, Spellings/ Detecting Mis-spelt words, Idioms & Phrases, One-word substitution, Cloze Passage, Comprehension Passage, Shuffling of Sentence parts.

3. Quantitative Aptitude (Maths)

Questions will be asked from the following topics:

  • Number Systems: Decimal and Fractions, Computation of Whole Numbers, and Relationship between numbers.
  • Fundamental arithmetical operations: Averages, Interest (Simple and Compound), Profit and Loss, Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Square roots, Discount, Time and Work.
  • Algebra: Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra and Graphs of Linear Equations.
  • Geometry: Triangle centers, Congruence, Circle chords, tangents, and angles.
  • Mensuration: Right Prism, Cone, Cylinder, Sphere, Hemispheres, Pyramid.
  • Trigonometry: Trigonometric ratios, Height, and distances.
  • Statistical Charts: Histogram, Bar-diagram, Pie-chart.

4. General Awareness

Questions are designed to test the candidate’s general awareness of the environment. The test will include questions about India and its neighbouring countries, especially History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General policy, and Scientific Research.

5. Computer Knowledge (Mandatory)

  • Computer Basics: CPU, Input/Output devices, Memory organization, Back-up devices, Windows Explorer.
  • Software: Windows OS, MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Internet: Web Browsing, Searching, Downloading, E-mail, e-Banking.
  • Cyber Security: Networking protocols, Security threats (hacking, virus, Trojans) and preventive measures.

Tier-II Skill Test / Typing Test Guidelines

Part A – Skill Test for DEO: Data Entry Speed of 8,000 Key Depressions per hour (approx. 27 Words Per Minute) on Computer. Duration: 15 Minutes.

Part B – Typing Test for LDC/JSA: Candidates opting for English medium should have a typing speed of 35 words per minute (w.p.m.) and those opting for Hindi medium should have a typing speed of 30 words per minute (w.p.m.). Duration: 10 Minutes.
